Tony Wood New Education Commissioner, Fills Role of PCSSD Board

Tony Wood New Education Commissioner, Fills Role of PCSSD Board

The State Board of Education approved Tony Wood as the Arkansas Department of Education commissioner last month. Gov. Mike Beebe previously recommended Wood for the position.... Wood, previously the deputy commissioner, replaced Dr. Tom Kimbrell, who accepted the superintendent position at the Bryant School District.

“Tony Wood is clearly a good choice to be our next commissioner of education,” Gov. Beebe said. “He has always put the needs of students first throughout his academic career, and Tony has carried that philosophy statewide while serving Arkansas as deputy commissioner.”

“While transition is never simple, I cannot imagine being more confident in the leadership of the department and the future of education in Arkansas,” SBE Board Chair Brenda Gullett said. “Tony Wood is an exceptional leader and will be an exceptional commissioner.”

The Arkansas State Board of Health has recently mandated some new immunizations for the 2014-2015 school year.

The law will go into effect September 1, 2014. Students will have until October 1, 2014 to show proof to their school that they have obtained the needed vaccines. If a parent cannot provide documentation that the student has received the necessary vaccines by October 1, 2014, the student will be excluded from school at that time. The student will not be allowed to enter school until the necessary documentation is provided.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Tonight's My Town Hero is a legendary Little Rock basketball coach. He's accomplished some remarkable things on the court over the years, but it's what the Arkansas Sports Hall of Famer is doing off the court that makes him so worthy of being called a Town Hero.

This man needs no introduction. Just take a look at the plaques along his wall, and you'll know right away you're in the presence of greatness. Charles Ripley, Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director at Arkansas Baptist College, wears many hats, but the most significant pertains to meeting the needs of his young athletes.

When the fire alarm goes off, firefighters drop everything and race to an emergency. But, it typically ends there. They'll likely never meet the person they've saved. Chirie Bazzelle was adamant about meeting the men she knows saved her life.

"They're my heroes, my angels. I truly believe they're my angels,” she told THV11.
