$900 raised toward Mr. Wiggles' surgery

SHERWOOD, Ark. (KTHV) - In an update to a story we brought you earlier this week, a 4-year-old dachshund, named Mr. Wiggles, is getting help from all over the state.

Mr. Wiggles lost the use of his back legs due to spinal problems, and his previous owner dropped him off near the road next to Sherwood Animal Services. A worker found him in the bushes.

Since THV 11 aired the story Tuesday, nearly $900 has been raised to get him the surgery he needs. Dr. Larry Nafe, a D.V.M. in neurosurgery, estimates the procedure will cost $5,000.

Mr. Wiggles drags himself around on his two good legs, bound and determined.

Julann Carney is the President of Sherwood Animal Shelter Helpers, or SASH. She said there is good news to report though--temporary relief is on the way.

"We've got a wheelchair coming that was donated by a manufacturer out of state to try and help keep his legs from having any abrasions or any potential damage, so until we raise the funds we'll be able to have use of that wheelchair for him," Carney said.

Animal control officer Angela Spears was coming out of the shelter late on a Saturday night, July 27, when she heard a noise just a few feet away.

"It was dark. I didn't know what he was. He could have been a rabbit, could have been a possum. And he actually came out of the bushes -- he didn't bark, he didn't alarm anybody, 'Hey I'm here.' He just started running towards me," Spears said.

While Mr. Wiggles' life has been saved help is still needed to help him walk correctly again.

"Lemonade stands, and car washes and yard sales, any and all. If you want to donate 50 cents because that's what you've got. We'll take it. He needs it," Spears said.

"Any funds we raise above and beyond his surgery needs, we'll dedicate to other special needs animals that will undoubtedly come in," Carney added.

Sherwood Animal Shelter Helpers, the volunteer organization for Sherwood Animal Shelter, has set up an account at Eagle Bank for Mr. Wiggles and has started a Facebook page to help raise money for the surgery: https://www.facebook.com/#!/scooterakamrwiggles.
