Volunteer registry helps support families with autism

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas families affected by autism have their first chance to participate in a volunteer registry that will track how many people in the state have autism spectrum disorders with the debut of a new website, ArkansasAutismAlliance.org. Families will also find a host of autism resources compiled on the site, which is a collaboration between Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH), the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

“This website will help families understand what’s happening with autism in Arkansas,” said Jill James, PhD, director of the Autism Metabolic Genomics Laboratory at ACHRI, a professor of Pediatrics in the UAMS College of Medicine, and an autism researcher who developed the site.

Welcome home, warriors

By Staff Sgt. Nestor Cruz, 19th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- Team Little Rock deployers will receive "rock star" treatment during a Welcome Home Warriors homecoming event Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. at Hangar 1080 on base.

Deployers will receive a true hero’s welcome as they walk down a red carpet flanked by well wishers waving American flags. The event is designed to recognize individual deployers who returned home through commercial airports between Nov. 5, 2010, up to now, said 1st Lt. Michael McKenna, Welcome Home Warriors project officer.

"These people came home from a six-month, eight-month or year-long deployment and didn't get the same welcome as the big groups [of deployers]," said Lieutenant McKenna. "This is [the base community’s] chance to show them how much we appreciate all they have done."

The party atmosphere features fun food like hot dogs and chili, non-alcoholic beverages, music and door prizes.
